Cette année, la création spéciale du Festival Inferno Switzerland sera le projet WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN qui unira les traditions culturelles et musicales de la Suisse et de la Norvège dans le cadre unique du Château de Chillon.

Préparez-vous à découvrir la création originale incontournable du Festival Inferno 2013, WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN, le jeudi 14 mars prochain. Ce projet, présenté en exclusivité dans le cadre de l’Inferno, unira cors des Alpes suisses et instruments traditionnels norvégiens tels que des cors (Neverlur), percussions, flûtes et voix dans le cadre unique du Château de Chillon.



Un mot sur les créateurs du projet

WARDRUNA, groupe norvégien, est un projet musical basé sur les anciennes croyances nordiques et sur la tradition rune. Ce projet, emmené par Einar Selvik et Gaahl (ex Gorgoroth, God Seed), est particulièrement centré sur l'alphabet runique. Leur musique est jouée avec des instruments traditionnels et nous renvoient aux légendes et poèmes Vikings. Grâce à l'apport de sonorités contemporaines (par ex. samples) et dans une démarche empreinte de modernité, WARDRUNA touche un auditoire large et permet de mieux appréhender certaines influences qui ont façonné le rock scandinave.

À l'occasion de l'Inferno 2013, le groupe se produira également sur la scène des DOCKS le 15 mars prochain afin de présenter son nouvel album «Runaljod – Yggdrasil» en première mondiale et dans sa formation de base (sans les cors suisses).



Réunir la culture et la tradition du cor de la Suisse et de la Norvège

En invitant des musiciens de cors des Alpes dans l’instrumentation nordique de WARDRUNA, ce projet offre une passerelle entre la Suisse et la Norvège, deux pays de montagnes, de forêts et de glaciers où culture et cadre naturel exceptionnel sont intimement liés. Une partie de cette création originale et lyrique sera d'ailleurs basée sur le manuscript «Abedecium Nordmannicum» - bien connu sous le nom du «poème runique suisse» - datant du 9ème siècle et exposé à l’Abbaye de Saint-Gall.

Compte tenu de l'accordage spécifique du cor des Alpes, il a fallu composer des musiques spécialement et certaines chansons de WARDRUNA ont été réarrangées pour l’occasion.

Sur scène, la performance WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN présentera une formation de 11-12 musiciens:

Voix, percussions, harpe traditionnelle nordique, violon traditionnel norvégien, vielle, corne de chèvre, cors traditionnels en corne et en bois (Neverlur), guimbarde, lyre, flûte, sons et ambiances divers (samples) joués par les musiciens de WARDRUNA

1-2 cors des Alpes sous la conduite de Pascal Schaer (Genève).

L’utilisation des cors en Norvège et en Suisse

Depuis des millénaires, l’utilisation des instruments en corne en Norvège est un élément central dans la mythologie, la foi, lors de diverses cérémonies ou comme outil de communication dans différents contextes.



Dans la mythologie nordique, «Gjallarhorn» est le cor que le Dieu Heimdallr souffle pour annoncer le commencement et la grande transformation connue sous le nom de Ragnarok. Aujourd’hui, l’utilisation d’instruments en corne est toujours une tradition vivante en Norvège, laquelle nous ramène aux cors utilisés par les Vikings ou les bergers pour signaler un danger ou pour effrayer l’ennemi.

La Suisse a, elle aussi, une ancienne et encore riche tradition dans l’utilisation de cors comme outils de communication sur de grandes distances entre les vallées ou comme instrument de musique. Par exemple, l’instrument norvégien Neverlur est très proche de son cousin le cors des Alpes, tant au niveau du son qu’il produit que dans son application.



«Le poème runique suisse»

La tradition rune est un élément central dans l’univers thématique de WARDRUNA. Dans ce contexte, l’idée d’utiliser un manuscript traîtant de l’âge Viking et rune, qui est en fait lié avec la Suisse, est toute naturelle. En effet, dans la bilbliothèque de l’Abbaye de Saint-Gall listée au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco, on peut trouver le manuscript «Codex Sangallensis» datant du 9ème siècle. Ce manuscript contient une section appellée «Abecedicum Nordmannicum», un court poème runique ou présentation des seize runes du Jeune Futhark (Young Futhark), souvent référencé comme le «poème runique suisse».

This year, the original production of the Inferno Festival Switzerland will be the WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN project aiming at uniting the Norwegian and Swiss cultural and musical traditions in the unique venue of the Chillon Castle.

Get prepared for the amazing original and firm favourite production of the Inferno Festival Switzerland 2013, WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN, on March 14, 2013. This project featuring Swiss Alphorns and Norwegian traditional instruments such as horns (Neverlur), percussions, flutes and vocals will be presented exclusively at the Inferno Festival Switzerland in the unique venue of the Chillon Castle (Montreux).



About the project’s originators

WARDRUNA is a Norwegian musical project based on ancient Nordic beliefs and rune traditions. Led by its frontman Einar Selvik and Gaahl (ex Gorgoroth, God Seed), the project is set out to make musical interpretations of various themes in the pre-christian Scandinavian traditions, using contemporary and other relevant instruments and techniques sending us back to Vikings legends and poems.

Thanks to contemporary sonorities (for ex. samples) and a modern approach, WARDRUNA reaches a large audience allowing a better understanding of some of the influences that shaped Scandinavian rock.

At the occasion of the Inferno 2013, the band will also play on the stage of the DOCKS on March 15, 2013. They will present their new album «Runaljod – Yggdrasil» as a world premiere and in the band’s basic formation (without Swiss Alphorns).



Unite the culture and the tradition of horn of Switzerland and Norway

By inviting Swiss Alphorn musicians into WARDRUNA’s Norse instrumentation, this project aims at bridging Switzerland and Norway together, two countries made of mountains, forests and glaciers where culture and exceptional natural landscapes are intimately linked together.

Moreover, part of this original production will be based upon the manuscript «Abedecium Nordmannicum» - also known as «the swiss runepoem» - from the 9th century and exposed at the Abbey of Saint-Gall.



The production will also contain equal parts of new compositions and re-arranged WARDRUNA’ songs (matching with the specific tuning of the Swiss Alphorns).

On stage, the performance WARDRUNA – GJALLARHORN will present a formation of about ten musicians as follows:

Vocals, Percussion, Tagelharpe, Hardanger fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, Goathorn, tonguehorn, Neverlur, Jawharp, Kraviklyre, Flute, Samples, played by WARDRUNA musicians

1-2 Alphorns, played by swiss musicians and orchestra, led by Pascal Schaer.

The use of horns in Norway and Switzerland

The use of horn instruments in Norway has for several millenniums been central both in mythologies, faith, in ceremonial contexts and as a tool for communication in different contexts.

In Norse mythology, «Gjallarhorn» is the horn that the god Heimdallr blows to warn the beginning of the great transformation that is known as Ragnarok. From the ritual bronzelures in the Bronze Age, the signalhorns of the vikings, shepherd's prillarhorn and scare-horns of cows and goathorns and the neverlur tradition (birchbark-lure), horn instrumentation is still a living tradition in Norway.

Switzerland also has an old- and still a rich living tradition for the use of horns as a communication tool over long distances and in the highlands as well as a musical instrument. For example, the Norwegian Birchbark- lure is closely related with the Swiss Alpenhorn, both in sound and application.



«The Swiss runepoem»

The runes are central in the thematic universe of which WARDRUNA operates so in this context, it is therefore natural to use a manuscript about the Viking age runes that are infact related to Switzerland. In the grand library of the Unesco world heritage-listed «Abbey of St. Gall» in what is now Switzerland, one can find the manuscript «Codex Sangallensis» from the 9th century. It contains a section called «Abecedicum Nordmannicum» which is a short runic poem or presentation of the 16 runes of the Younger Futhark often referred to as «the swiss runepoem».

Progetto interesantissimo e lo ammetto quando ho scoperto che nella band c'era anche gahl non ci volevo credere ;D non lo sopporto come persona e tutto ma con questo progetto ha sicuramente preso punti, cmq gahl a parte questo pè un progetto da seguire, non è facile al giorno d'oggi proporre una musica del genere, max rispetto e lunga vita a questo progetto!!
