MUNRUTHEL is a project driven by Vladislav "Munruthel" Redkin, a legend of Ukrainian underground, who took part in creation, recording and sound production of around 40 albums with various bands and projects. In 2012 MUNRUTHEL celebrated 15 years anniversale since the release of their first album "Yav, Nav i Prav" (Явь, Навь и Правь) in 1997.

Masha Scream from pagan metal group gets ready to let rip

If you met Maria Arkhipova, a petite blonde with a shy smile, it's doubtful you'd guess that she's the lead singer of pagan metal group Arkona - and the possessor of a low, dark voice that sounds as if it has been dug up from deep in the bowels of the earth.

Masha Scream, as Arkhipova is known, will play in Moscow on Saturday. Arkona is briefly heading home in the middle of a mammoth world tour spanning North and South America, Germany and Canada.

Arkhipova created Arkona in 2002, naming the band after a legendary Slavic fortress in the Middle Ages, which housed a horse oracle. The fortress, located in northern present-day Germany, was destroyed by Danish invaders in the 12th century.

The music is a mix of Russian traditional music and raucous metal, along with Arkhipova's signature mix of unearthly growls and screams. In "Zimushka," the group recorded a metal version of a Siberian traditional song about the complex relationship between a husband and wife.

In 2005, after the group took the German metal festival Ragnarok by storm, Arkona was picked up by Napalm Records, which specializes in metal groups. With its sell-out international tour schedule, Arcona can rightly consider itself the most popular Russian group in the world.

"Honestly, I can't really name all the countries we visited in 2012, because I have them all mixed up in my head," said Arkhipova in a telephone interview before a gig in Stavropol. "Sometimes it's ridiculous when I wake up in the tour bus, go up to our director Anton and ask him the same question: ‘And what country are we playing today?'"

She has, she admitted, already made the standard mistake of the world-weary musician. "In Germany, for example, I shout [onstage], ‘Hey, Austria!'"

Arkona is very much Arkhipova's group, as she writes the lyrics and the music. "My texts are my attitude, my pagan feeling in the modern world," she said.

She does not wander much outside this pagan world. She was once asked by a Ukrainian journalist whether Ukraine should join the European Union.

"To be honest, it's all the same to me if Ukraine joins the European Union or enters the Imperial Intergalactic United League for the destruction of cosmic space beetles. I'm not interested in politics," she said.

Instead of speaking of politics, she tells The Moscow News, as she tells nearly every interviewer, "I love my country with its long and very complicated history. I love Russian nature."

But for now, her world is one on the road, where all her new music is written. Sometimes she writes at sea, too.

"A couple of months ago, we had a crazy experience of being on a four-day metal cruise to the Caribbean, which was called ‘70,000 tons of metal,'" she said. "There were 4,000 people on board, a buffet and so many interesting things! We had a cabin with access to the ocean, and I was even lucky enough to see flying fish through the window."
