mi fa piacere che sottolinei il buon lavoro di Rudess

concordo, ma nn la vedo in modo così negativo... cioè io nn mi aspetto più che i DT siano all'avanguardia o che innovino, lo han fatto e benissimo per un decennio...

però una cosa da loro nn me l'aspettavo.. che riuscissero a tirar fuori un pezzo bellissimo come breaking all illusions, roba che nn facevano ormai da anni

 

Meravigliosa...la vera review che ogni DT-basher avrebbe sempre sognato di scrivere...putroppo non ho tempo per tradurla (sarebbe difficile...), per la vostra gioia my time is over!


A Dramatic Review of Events

A year ago, the future of prog-metal gods Dream Theater was in doubt. Founding member, principal songwriter, vocalist, producer, t-shirt designer, tour manager, produce quality assurance manager, button sewer, visionary, and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Portnoy had not only steered the band through the shark-infested waters of prog-dom, but was also president of the band's record label, foster parent to the other band members, and generally accepted as creator of the known universe and all its subsidiaries. When he announced his departure to take over Avenged Sevenfold (a.k.a AX7, A7X, AVX7, AVII-F, and Those Fuckers Who Stole Mike Portnoy) and star as Bearded Smurf in last summer's hit Smurfs movie, most fans tore the liner notes to their CDs and spat on the autographed band pictures they paid upwards of $700 for at meet and greets. The horizon was darker than the bands last two album covers. “They're fucked,” remarked Bill Bruford. “Look what happened to Yes after I left. Royally and truly fucked.”

Much to fan's surprise, the gaping void left by Portnoy's departure was quickly filled by John Myung, reclusive bass player, who had clearly been waiting for his chance to rise up and take control. Testament to his prolific rise to power is Myung's fingerprints all over the band's new release A Dramatic Turn of Events. Myung returns to the fold writing not only 100% of the new lyrics and music, but also writing on singing on new albums by every artist released this Tuesday, prompting a statement from Anthrax: “What the hell, dude? You're not even in our band.” “Dream Theater?” asked Lady Antebellum vocalist Hillary Scott,”Isn't that the new strip club over on 5th?” When confronted by vocalist James LaBrie about this power-grab, Myung responded by tackling LaBrie and crushing his recently healed esophagus while shouting, “Persuade THIS element, bitch!”

Fact is, A Dramatic Turn of Events signals the beginning of the end for Dream Theater. The songs reek of desperation, of a band trying hard to recapture their former glory by recycling the same tired cliches of a dying genre. Heavy metal riffs, melodic keyboards, soaring vocals, and technically astounding drumming. Yawn. The band continues to play long songs, solo constantly, write lyrics about deep subject matter, dress in black, and perform in front of large audiences. We've seen and heard all this before. One fan took to the internet to express his disgust: “They're actually using the same notes they've played on other albums. I mean, how many times is John Petrucci going to play an F#minor chord for chrissake? And don't get me started on Jordan Rudess. Hello, Jordan? We know your keyboard has at least 88 keys. Why have you only used 87 on the last 5 albums? I mean, back in the day Kevin Moore used all 88 keys and it helped define the band's sound! Even these songs sound like songs Dream Theater have played before! It's like they're the exact same band, only without Kevin Moore!”

The same except for the noticeable absence of Portnoy behind the drum kit, vocal mike, and in the light trusses above the stage, pulling at the marionette strings which even made it possible for the band to perform live or function as human beings. In lieu of Portnoy, the band opted to used the much lauded, new Mmm-Angini drum machine software (v. O-Face). Petrucci reportedly programmed the Angini to play all the drum parts for the new album, and the band went so far as to have a robotic mannequin fashioned to mime the studio parts onstage for the tour. Says Petrucci, “The Angini has more than met our expectations, and John Myung approves, which is really all that's important at this point. I don't want to piss that guy off. My only worry is that the robot has taken up smoking these terrible smelling cigars and it's really fogging up the bus. The second hand smoke has already reduced my body/mass index by 20%, which is making my guitars look too large when I hold them.”

The lack of a real drummer shows itself in the band's heavy dependence on electronic drums – an unwelcome turn that may also be due to vocalist James LaBrie recording his vocals in Canada, home of popular acts like Celine Dion and k.d.Lang, both notorious for their overuse of electronic drums. LaBrie himself is sure to garner increased criticism from fans, as over the last few albums the vocalist has devolved to the point of using death metal growls, distorted vocals, and on this latest release, belching noises. LaBrie is clearly feeling the freedom of recording his own vocals without Portnoy's supervision, about whom LaBrie noted, “He's ugly. And his momma dresses him funny.” Portnoy responded by starting a side project with Bruce Dickenson, Rob Halford, James Hetfeld, and Geoff Tate. “I've always wanted to work with these guys and all their bands suck now, so it seemed like the right time.” The new project, titled simply “5” will feature no instrumentation, only unison vocals.

All in all, A Dramatic Turn of Events is a copy cat, churned out by a band past their prime. There comes a certain point where a band turns into a franchise because it contains none of the original members. With the absence of Moore, Chris Collins, and now Portnoy, the band is left with no options but to mimic past albums and take thinly veiled pot-shots at past members, as best seen in Beneath the Surface, a syrupy ballad that hints at the rumored homosexual relationship between Portnoy and Petrucci. Other song titles like “Outcry,” “Lost Not Forgotten,” and, “Far From Heaven,” do little to dissuade the listener that the album isn't a desperate cry to be put out of their misery.

dio santo, è un parere personale il voto...criticabile quanto volete ma qui gente che grida al gomblotto, gente che dice che "chi recensisce è prevenuto" , gente che dice "ecco come sarebbe stata la recensione"

ma fate una cosa, scrivetevela voi la recensione così ci divertiamo noi a rompervi,scusatemi il termine, le palle...non parlo a nome dei recensori di tm -non essendolo- ma io da utente mi son veramente rotto a leggere ste robe...figuriamoci coloro a cui sono rivolte 'ste critiche che non solo le leggono, ma devono rispondere anche.

 

sono assolutamente d'accordo con te. Questo disco è tutto ciò che mi sarei aspettato dai dream theater nel 2011 e non mi ha sorpreso nemmeno un pò. Non ce sia una cosa negativa, però ogni disco precedente dei dream in questa decade aveva un sound particolare che lo contraddistingueva. Questo invece no. Le canzoni scorrono piacevolmente dall'inizio alla fine senza particolari cali, ma nemmeno senza toccare particolari picchi di eccellenza (apparte forse breaking all illusions). Ok debbo precisare che ancora sono ai primissimi ascolti dell'album ma per ora il disco mi da queste impressioni.

 

Si vabbè ragazzi, siamo seri.Io il disco non l'ho ascoltato, ma non penso nella maniera più assoluta che tocchi picchi di ridicolaggine come never enough ma anche eternal dark night.

 

Quoto, siamo in due. Io ogni tanto scrivo recensioni per TM invece, quindi in un certo senso mi sento anche chiamato in causa.

Trovo le recensioni di Acid Rain sempre molto ben articolate e motivate. Mi sembra un tipo che spazia su vari generi musicali (a giudicare dai suoi ascolti che mano a mano ho avuto modo di leggere in firma) e che di musica ne conosce il giusto.

Il disco non lo commento perchè non l'ho sentito, non sono un fan dei DT (mi piace giusto qualcosa di inizio carriera, ma non fanno per me), però magari posso consigliare ad alcuni utenti di essere meno accaniti nei commenti.

Ci sta di essere in disaccordo con una recensione, a chi non è mai capitato? Però insomma, un conto è discutere tranquillamente di un disco, e un conto è accusare di incompetenza un recensore perchè ha stroncato un disco del proprio gruppo preferito.

Più serenità dai

Chiudo con una cosa simpatica (oddio, dipende ): su Facebook giorni fa lessi che c'era una pagina ironica chiamata "Fans irritanti e presuntuosi dei Dream Theater". Magari generalizza un po' troppo, ma devo dire che a giudicare dai commenti letti ci prende abbastanza

Scusate di nuovo per l'inglese, ma vi posto quella che secondo me è la recensione (corta) meglio scritta che ho trovato finora. Quello che emerge, IMHO, è come le peculariatà storiche dei Dream siano viste come una loro caratteristica, e non un difetto...
Massimo, in particolare trovo che la (breve) analisi sulla tecnica sia allo stesso tempo molto ironica e molto centrata..(parti in grassetto...)

A new beat, the same virtuosity
Considering Dream Theater's songs feature unapologetic histrionics and more sections than a centipede, the title of the progressive-metal virtuosos' 11th studio album could have worked for any preceding release. Attached to this particular album, it's hard not to connect the title to a dramatic turn of events behind the scenes: the departure of drummer and co-founder Mike Portnoy.

Portnoy arguably commands more worship from music-store loiterers than any other rock percussionist who isn't Neil Peart, and he has an outsized personality to match his skill. At Dream Theater concerts, he was more of a ringleader than singer James LaBrie. Add his involvement in the writing process - which went far beyond death-defying drum fills - and Portnoy's departure could have dealt a fatal blow. Instead, it appears to have made Dream Theater more disciplined than the quintet has been in a very long time.

In hindsight, this shouldn't have been a surprise. Dream Theater's virtues don't include restraint, and Portnoy was the least subtle player in the bunch. The band's melodramatic streak reached its nadir with 2009's Black Clouds and Silver Linings, on which Portnoy was even more walloping than usual. By contrast, new drummer Mike Mangini is a superhuman talent whose dexterity doesn't often seem to be a means of showing off, and there isn't a single moment on A Dramatic Turn of Events when he draws undue attention to himself.

Undue attention is a relative concept; most of Dream Theater's intricate compositions are still built to accommodate virtuosity. The unison playing in the 10-minute Lost Not Forgotten is ridiculous, both in terms of its technical demands and its relevance to the central melody. The 12½-minute Breaking All Illusions features an overstuffed sequence led by keyboardist Jordan Rudess - the band's most incorrigible noodler - including a few seconds of Bee Gees disco because . well, just because.

And yet, Breaking All Illusions also features a soaring chorus from LaBrie that redeems his bandmates' goofiness, and demonstrates how Dream Theater can weigh emotional resonance against algebraic time signatures - a balance that hasn't been struck so effectively since 1999's Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. Far from Heaven and Beneath the Surface don't even try to give seizures to music-school grads; they're among the simplest and most poignant ballads in the band's catalogue.

Many fans will approach A Dramatic Turn of Events with healthy skepticism in light of Portnoy's absence. But aside from Build Me Up, Break Me Down - whose dated nu-metal texture sounds downright revolutionary from such a single-minded group - there's nothing here that could be taken as sacrilege by the devout. This is a Dream Theater album, with all that implies, and it's one of the best.

Podworthy: Breaking All Illusions

 

E' da ieri che riascolto il cd... Non so se sarà perchè c'ho un'età o perchè son diventata troppo "sensible" ma Petrucci in questo album mi emoziona tantissimo...poco fa c'ho fatto quasi la lacrima.. da tempo non lo sentivo così ispirato,coinvolgente e appassionato.. E confermo che ,PER ME,Breaking all Illusions è il loro miglior pezzo da almeno 10 anni in qua.. E' perfetta,emozionante,ogni volta che la sento mi fa venire i brividi.Meravigliosa.

 

Io invece mi sto divertendo un sacco a leggere i "battibecchi"! Poi son civili e quando si parla di musica è sempre bello!

P.S. Se però vi scannate ci divertiamo di più!

Avessi avuto 10 anni di meno avrei risposto un pò peggio ad un paio di battutine, ma putroppo l'età avanza...

Non così vecchio però da non perdere tempo qua...uff....c'avrei da lavorare, ma il disco dei Dream esce una volta ogni 2 anni e 2 giorni si possono buttare!!

Consiglio ai musicisti di andare su Guitar World a vedere la spiegazione fatta da Petrucci passaggio per passaggio di come è fatta OTBOA, assolo incluso.
Sarei curioso di vedere lo stesso per Outcry però, con OTBOA è troppo facile....

 

Bè alla fine l unica cosa che si potrebbe obiettare su questa recensione non è nè la recensione stessa (scritta bene....che argomenta ciò che dice) nè il voto (ognuno la può pensare come vuole), ma il fatto che voto e recensione sembrano non coincidere: uno dopo aver letto si aspetterebbe un 70-75 e rimane spiazzato leggendo un 58.

La recensione personalmente non la condivido in toto...in alcune parti si in altre no...ma è fatta bene

Voi fate bene a dire che i recensori sono diversi, che ognuno ha la sua opinione, che il voto non è la cosa importante di una recensione.

Però mettetevi nei panni degli utenti che navigano sul web (e che magari sbagliano): qui non siamo su "debaser" o su "ciao" dove ognuno scrive la sua recensione personale, ma siamo su "Truemetal"...io personalmente (e sbagliando lo ammetto) quando leggo una recensione su questo sito non penso "questa è la recensione di tizio", ma penso "questa è la recensione di Truemetal".....quindi io lo so che anche nei giornali ci sono mille recensori ed ognuno ragiona a modo suo ci mancherebbe altro...ma penso che almeno nei voti (e qui lo so siamo noi utenti che magari ignorantemente facciamo confronti fra voti e anche paragonando le diverse testate diciamo "quello ha dato 6 ...quello ha dato 8) bisognerebbe cercare un compromesso basandosi anche sulle recensioni fatte dagli altri colleghi...in modo da avere (nei limiti del possibile) una scala ben tarata e non trovarsi un systematic chaos a 75 8o voto simile non ricordo) e un a dramatic turns a 58....

io penso che il compito di questo portale sia quello di consigliare o meno l acquisto di un disco...e io molte volte prima di acquistare un cd mi sono fidati dei vostri giudizi professionali...certo soggetivi (è normale), ma professionali (come professionale è anche questa recensione...solo il voto sembra non quadrare con quanto scritto)....leggere un 58 (una sufficienza rasente) ad un utente che naviga distrattamente nel web e che magari non è un fan ossessionato della band, ma che comunque la ascolta ed ha diversi cd farebbe pensare "vabbè meglio evitare di comprare il cd stavolta...è a malapena sufficiente"...e magari lo stesso utente si è comprato systematic chaos......perchè io ad uno a cui piaccichiano i dream theater non sconsiglierei l acquisto di questo cd, ma anzi tutto il contrario

poi ripeto recensione professionale e seria (anche se ovviamente non la condivido tutta perchè ognuno ragiona a modo suo...comunque si vede che il recensore non è assolutamente prevenuto e che è un ascoltatore attento della band)...niente da dire in merito...ottimo lavoro

EDIT: certo nella recensione comunque compaiono diverse critiche un pò troppo immeritate secondo il mio parere..secondo me non se lo merita proprio questo cd..ma de gustibus

Certi commenti che leggo nella recensione sembrano fatti da bambini di 10 anni, addirittura si permettono di offendere gratuitamente una persona che non conoscono. Gente che legge solo il voto e non la recensione... Mah
