2008-02-05 "Watershed" is the name of Opeth´s 9th studio observation. The album has just been mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren with M. Åkerfeldt. The album consist of 7 songs and the titles are as follows:

1. Coil
2. Heir Apparent
3. The Lotus Eater
4. Burden
5. Porcelain Heart
6. Hessian Peel
7 Hex Omega

All the songs have been written by M. Åkerfeldt apart from "Porcelain Heart" which was co-written with Fredrik Åkesson. One additonal track, "Derelict Herds" has also been recorded and this was written by Mikael Åkerfeldt and Per Wiberg. On top of this, 3 cover songs has been recorded. "Bridge of sighs" from Robin Trower´s 1974 Lp with the same title, "Den ständiga resan" (sung in Swedish) by Marie Fredriksson as well as the classic Alice in Chains song, "Would?".

The album was recorded at Fascination street studios during November 1 and December 13. Some addtional recordings were done between January 3rd and 7th. Produced by Jens Bogren and Mikael Åkerfeldt and Opeth.

Says Mikael Åkerfeldt: "I´ve worked so hard with these songs for quite some time now, I´ve listened to 'em a zillion times. I don't hate them just yet! The album sounds great sonically and I think I can hear us evolving as the record plays on. It is taking us somewhere musically and I don't know where. It's very exciting to say the least! I can't remember having enjoyed a recording this much ever before."

The cover was (as usual) designed by Travis Smith in co-operation with Åkerfeldt. Release date is yet to be confirmed but Roadrunner worldwide will have it out sometime in the Springtime of this year. www.opeth.com

Swedish progressive metal titans OPETH have set "Watershed" as the title of their forthcoming album, due out on June 3 via Roadrunner Records (one day earlier internationally). The CD, recorded in the band's native Sweden and produced by frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jens Bogren, is a masterwork that follows the time-honored OPETH tradition; its modern yet timeless, progressive yet paying homage to the sounds of classic rock.

According to a press release, "Watershed" is truly one of those special records that cycles through a variety of moods, speeds and textures, complete with lots of subtleties and nuances of sound. Because of its expansive scope, "Watershed" is destined to land the album atop many "best-of" lists. Album opener "Coil" is a gorgeous acoustic number, featuring local folk vocalist Nathalie Lorichs, while "Heir Apparent" will knock listeners unconscious with its blunt force metal. Always one to defy the rules, OPETH posits sung vocals over artillery-like blast beats on "The Lotus Eater", cementing their reputation as innovators and redefiners.

"Watershed" combines elements of modern metal, prog rock, free jazz and hints of European folk music, all of which come together for a seamless, unique collection of songs that will leave an indelible mark upon all who listen.

The follow-up to 2005's "Ghost Reveries" is the first OPETH release to feature new guitarist Fredrik Åkesson and drummer Martin Axenrot and is the band's second effort for Roadrunner Records.

In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Åkerfeldt stated about "Watershed", "The music is much more complex. The metal parts are even faster and a lot more technical than the last one. It's really hard to play some of this stuff. I mean, I wrote it and even I have trouble playing parts of it. I think it's going to be hard for some people to get into. It's definitely not a commercial-sounding record. The arrangements are exhausting. And it's much darker. Even the major patterns are very dark, while I think 'Ghost Reveries' had some light."

When asked if the songs were influences by anything musical, Mikael replied, I was hugely inspired by Scott Walker, who's an avant-garde artist and crooner. Last year he put out a record called 'The Drift', which is quite extreme and frightening, and it made a huge impact on me. Immediately, I wanted to do something like that. It just felt right. Also, with the situation the band has gone through over the last couple of years with the lineup changes, I just wanted it to be this way. I didn't want it to be a happy-sounding record."

OPETH's "The Roundhouse Tapes" high-definition-filmed DVD has had its projected release date pushed back to September 2008 from the previously announced early 2008. This will also feature lots of fan interviews, band interviews, soundcheck footage and live photos, along with exclusive menu music written by mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt and keyboardist Per Wiberg.

OPETH's "The Roundhouse Tapes" double CD has sold 2,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set contains "a captivating OPETH performance from the Camden Roundhouse, London, UK, on November 9, 2006, and sees the band in scintillating form churning out a selection of classics from their illustrious career," according to a press release.

The band will take part in DREAM THEATER's "Progressive Nation" in the spring, a package tour that will also feature the talents of 3 and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.

"Ghost Reveries" has sold around 90,000 copies in the United States since its 2005 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.



Che dire, voglio proprio sentire in cantato femminile, sarebbe una novità assoluta!!!
Quello che mi terrorizza sono le influenze di Scott Walker, di cui già da tempo mi sono procurato del materiale, ma che nonostante ne ammiri l'originalità, lo considero per lo più inascoltabile...

sto ascoltando le originali delle cover, beh Would è un gran bel pezzo, ma mikeal ce lo vedo maluccio a cantarlo.
Quanto a Bridge of Sighs, bello anche questo, più che altro ho notato che il riff principale è mooolto simile a peruvian skies dei Dream Theater.... ennesimo scopiazzo degli anni 70??

Ok, curiosità e aspettative oltre ogni limite. Io sono fiducioso, fin'ora non hanno mai sbagliato nulla....
L'unica cosa è che fino al 2 giugno non passa davvero più...

 

Watershed...non vedo l'ora...speriamo bene...

 

Black Painkiller, data la notizia che hai riportato vai su wikipedia alla voce "manna" ed impara tutto A MEMORIA:p
ti si addice ormai.

Fino al 2 giugno è un moto d'ansia non da poco ("sempre sotto esami! come lucassen") e quella vocina femminile raccomandata non vorrei avesse troppe parti a gothicheggiare il tutto.
Paura del nuovo; in parte. Dall'altra mi dò un margine e lo affido alla pura forte curiosità.

C'è da vedere quanto questo lavoro saprà marcare confini, contorni, profilo, spessore rispetto al precedente (e più faticosamente rispetto a quei nove album...).

 

Ma sul serio?

 

Non ho mai letto pareri o commenti su WREATH da Deliverance, che ne dite di questo gioiello? ultimamente ho rivalutato quell'album ed anche la titletrack che ho sempre trovato migliore live che su disco. Mi sono ricreduto.

Canzone molto vasta..quasi con una sensazione di "troppo" vasta l'ultima: by the pain I see the others; ma con trovate intense e geniali dentro (ma anche solo per quel growl sfumato acqueo) tali da renderla la "solita" canzone degli opeth.
C'è poco da girarci intorno, si chiama Astinenza.

 

probabilmente hai ragione te è astinenza!comunque io personalemente ho sempre ritenuto deliverance un grandissimo album con delle perle assurde...vedi wreath

 

Per me la traccia Deliverance è una sorta di droga. Specialmente quel suo finale volutamente ipnotico.
