30.3. - Taake (Nor), Urgehal (Nor), Angantyr (Dnk), Gravdal (Nor), Black Shore (Ger)
    Channel Zero Ljublajana
    20h

    TAAKE:
In 1993, Ørjan Stedjeberg, now known as Ulvhedin Høst (often spelt Hoest), formed the first version of the band Taake under the name Thule, together with Svartulv, who was only twelve years old at the time. Thule released two demos; "Der Vinterstormene Raste" 1993 and "Omfavnet Av Svarte Vinger (Embraced By Black Wings)" 1994. Somewhere between the release of the latter demo and "Manndaudsvinter" in 1995, the band transformed from Thule to Taake which was more representative of the band and the area where Høst was from; the mountains of Bergen, Norway. Shortly after this release a 7" EP was released in 1996 called "Koldbrann i Jesu Marg," which would be the last demo recording that Taake would release.
The first full-length album "Nattestid Ser Porten Vid (Night Sees the Wide Gate)" was released by Wounded Love Records in 1999. The album was written entirely by Høst but he brought in a session musician, Tundra to perform bass and drums. It was recorded throughout 1997 and 1998 at Grieghallen. "Nattestid..." is part I of a trilogy, all the writing on the CD and lyrics in the booklet are written in runes. All of the lyics are sung in Norwegian. This album is now known as a classic.
The second installment of the trilogy "Over Bjoergvin Graater Himmerik (Heaven Cries over Bjoergvin)" was released in 2002. Again a seven song concept album, the theme for "...Bjoergvin..." is death (Bjoergvin is the former name of Bergen). On this record, Hoest surrounded himself with a band for the record: C. Corax on Guitars, Keridwen on bass, and Mutt (Gaahlskagg, Trelldom, Sigfader) on drums.
The final installment of the trilogy was released in 2005 by Dark Essence Records. Entitled "Hordalands Doedskvad (Hordaland's Deathchant)" it adhered to the 7 song format (representing the 7 mountains surrounding Bergen) of the first two records, but showed a change in style (Hordaland is a county in Norway). While the first two records in the trilogy were clearly 80s metal influenced, this album was performed in a more traditional black metal style which was reminiscent of Enslaved, Bathory and Kate Bush. "...Doedskvad" also differs from the other in that it features a number of guest musicians. These include the infamous Nattefrost from Carpathian Forest, Taipan (Orcustus), and Nordavind (ex-Carpathian Forest), as well as others. Following this release of this record Taake has had some minor releases, and played a few festivals (most notably Hole In The Sky Festival in Norway, with Ivar Bjørnson of Enslaved on guitars), but according to the official website they are "on ice for awhile."
Preceding the still 2006/2007 European tour, Taake revamped their official homepage, moving away from the defunct site. Following the infamous show in Essen, the band have been removed from several festivals and have taken much fire. It wouldn't be acquainted with publicity if it was happened thereby - Lava who has been bassist since 2002 left the band. The new website has also served as a place for Blabbermouth to get all the latest inflammatory statements from Hoest.
On September 8, 2008, Hoest announced on his homepage that he had recorded the fourth Taake album, simply titled "Taake". The album was recorded for Hoest´s own label Svartekunst Produksjoner and is distributed via Dark Essence Records.

    URGEHAL:
URGEHAL are keeping the faith and spirit of original Norwegian Black Metal and the band from Hønefoss has every right to do so. Ever since lead guitarist and singer Trondr Nefas founded URGEHAL with guitarist Enzifer as early as the year 1992, they have followed a strict policy of using satanic and misanthropic lyrics, heavy corpsepaint and spikes on stage as well as a dirty and harsh sound.
Although URGEHAL ’s sixth studio album “Ikonoklast” remains firmly with the Black Metal frame in its original sense, this unholy masterpiece offers impressive dynamics from doom-laden solemnity to furious outbreaks. A blasphemous groove is added to the malignant atmosphere, which permeates this frightening work of dark art. URGEHAL take an important step ahead of the pack and reach for the future of Norwegian Black Metal. Nevertheless the band’s roots still reach deep into their past.
URGEHAL ’s massive brutality and onslaught of fierceness challenged the underground even in terms of Norwegian extreme music. This vitriolic viciousness became apparent already during the band's demo days with “Ferd” (1994) and “Rise of the Monument” (1995). It was not a far step from their beginnings, when URGEHAL released the album debut “Arma Christi” in the year 1997. The band never wanted to be recognized by the major audience and therefore did not target their music towards any commercial paradigms of Heavy Metal, but stayed true to the old underground mentality.
Their crushing second output “Massive Terrestrial Strike” (1998) finally established the name URGEHAL firmly on the list of most aggressive Black Metal hordes. Harsh and ugly as this musical bastard remains until this day, the album left a strong impression on its audience and gained the Norwegians an international following. Always keeping a traditional approach to the style there were slight, but effective improvements on all of URGEHAL ‘s next offerings “Atomkinder” (2001), "Through Thick Fog Till Death" (2003) and “Goatcraft Torment” (2006). Despite consciously aiming at the underground, the band kept growing in reputation and status.
In the year 2007 URGEHAL saw it fit to celebrated their 15 years anniversary with the anniversary compilation “The Eternal Eclipse – 15 Years of Satanic Black Metal”. This was a staggering prove that there are still True Norwegian Black Metal bands out there, which are keeping the spirit of the early Nineties. Gathering momentum URGEHAL prepared the way for "Ikonoklast" by performing at an impressive number of festivals in summer 2009 like SWR Barroselas Metalfest (PT), Summerbreeze Open Air (DE), United Metal Maniacs Festival (DE), Barther Metal Open Air (DE) and Wolfszeit Festival (DE) as well as a full tour through the USA in autumn.
Now URGEHAL are bringing their warmachine to full power with “Ikonoklast”. The Norwegians embrace the values of the fundamental darkness, hate and misanthropy, which Black Metal is built upon. In this very conscious underground scene only a few bands are able to claim authenticity. URGEHAL count among the chose few that possess high credibility and respect amongst the followers of this extreme genre. “Ikonoklast” is the audible proof of their continued dirty war against ursupation by the boring mass market – yet there is an uncanny catchiness and sinister groove to their newest output. Let URGEHAL seduce your black soul and take you to hell!

    GRAVDAL:
The norwegian black metal band Gravdal was formed by Phobos (guitar) and Taakesjel (drums) the spring 2005.
GRAVDAL is a black metal band from the legendary Norwegian Bergen scene, with bands like GORGOROTH, TRELLDOM, ENSLAVED, IMMORTAL and many others reside. GRAVDAL consist of among others of an AETERNUS and MALSAIN member and the album is mixed and mastered by Herbrand Larsen from ENSLAVED at Earshot Studio who is also known for his work with Gorgoroth and Octavia Sperati to name a few. Gravdal performs 'straight in the face' black metal. The lyrical theme is based on proclaiming the tragedy of humans with weak will and to that extent lead their concieted misconceptions of self into despair. They recieved great response from the metalpress with great reviews; 9/10 My Last Chapter, Metalreviews 90/100, 7.5/10 Bloodchamber. Norwegian Black Metal delivered in a nice digipack.

19.6. - Arkona (Rus), Brezno (Si)
    Gala Hala, Metelkova
    22h

    ARKONA:
The roots of Arkona are to be searched for in the beginning of 2002, when the members of local pagan community "Vyatichi" – Maria "Scream" Arhipova and Alexander "Warlock" Korolyov decided to form a band, according to their ideology and musical tastes.
Initially, the band was called "Hyperborea", it consisted of: Maria "Scream" Arhipova (vocal), Eugene Knyazev (guitar), Eugene Borzov (bass-guitar), Ilya Bogatyryov (guitar), Alexander "Warlock" Korolyov (drums), Olga Loginova (keyboard). In February 2002 the band was renamed into "Arkona". The musical materials of the band were pagan/folk metal based and the lyrics had an idea of ancient national beliefs and history of Slavonic Russia.
In the end of the year it was decided to record several songs as a demo-record. The process of recording took place in December 2002, at CDM-Records studio. The demo consisted of 3 tracks – "Kolyada", "Solntsevorot" and "Rus'"Now this record is included into live-play album "Zhizn' vo slavu" (2006) as bonus material.
Since the beginning of 2003 the band has started its concert activity. Many people heard them for the first time at "Yazycheskaya Rus'" fest, which was held 8th February 2003 at "Estakada" club. Other bands that took part there were Butterfly Temple , Pagan Reign, Svarga, Rossomahaar.
Until summer 2003 the band performed a few local concerts, and then the question of debut LP recording was raised.
Unfortunately, by that time, several band members had lost interest for the further musical creativity, and in September 2003 the band Arkona dissapears.
Maria decided to keep on solo and asks her Nargathrond project mates for help in recording an opening LP. She got all the orchestration written down and musicians obtained them for learning and training. By March 2004 the first LP "Vozrozhdenie" was recorded without even a single rehearsal.
Nowadays this LP is spread all over the world and has received its recognition. It is recognized as one of the most successful Slavonic pagan metal LP ever. Immediately after studio work, Maria dedicates herself to the creation of new songs, and by the end of summer 2004 the material for the second album "Lepta" was ready. It was recorded the following autumn with the same musicians.
The album was released in December 2004 and, though LP continues the same old themes from "Vozrozhdenie", it is done in more dark and gloomy style. In the recording of this LP (as in the recording of previous one) took part a poet and vocalist Les'yar ( Nevid', ex-Butterfly Temple ), not only as a performer, but also as lyrics writer (the song "Zarnitsy Nashei Svobody").
By the moment of LP release, Arkona revived as a band - it consisted of musicians, which took part in recording of two first LPs. They were: Sergey "Lazar" (guitar), Ruslan "Knyaz'" (bass-guitar), Vlad "Artist" (drums). Since the beginning of the year 2005 the band could be seen again performing live.
Irrepressible creativity of Maria doesn't let her stop and by summer 2005 the band starts recording the third LP, the most complicated and varied album "Vo Slavu Velikim". The band decided to give up on using any synthesized instruments and used real ethnic instruments, so the list of musicians, that took part in this recording, considerably extended. One of the invited was a famous folk-musician Vladimir Cherepovskiy (Mervent, ex- Voinstvo Sidov, Veter Vody, Trio Mario) and members of bands Svarga and Alkonost.
The orchestration for the songs sometimes included over 100 record tracks, but the band overcame these difficulties and in September 2005 the LP gone gold. During its presentation the live performance was recorded and was released as a DVD and also included into live LP "Zhizn' vo Slavu".
In May 2007 Arkona started recording the 4th album 'Ot Serdca K Nebu' ('From Heart to the Skies'), where the previously started theme of the rebirth of culture and native Slavic religion found its continuation.
As for the music of this album, it represents the mix of modern metal styles: from brutal death metal ('Shrouds of Celestial Sage') and raw black metal ('Over the Abyss of Ages') up to beautiful ballad rock ('Oh, My Sorrow, My Anguish') and lofty epic metal ('Long live Rus!', 'Kolo Rolls'), and also somber doom ('The Arrow').
All the variety is saturated with the atmosphere, characteristic for all works by Arkona, and plenty of Slavic folk... As it was on the previous record, all parts of ethnic wind instruments were composed by a very special musician, a specialist in ancient music, Vladimir Cherepovsky (gaita, gallega, small pipe, hurdy-gurdy, tin whistle, low whistle, sopilka, pipes, pan flute, ocarina, zafun).
Also the vocalists of the Byelorussian folk choir 'Gostitsa' took part in recording.
The design of the album cover was developed by the famous Belgian artist Kris Verwimp...
The March of 2008 was a turning point for the band. Arkona performed as one of the headliners at the biggest European pagan metal fest called Ragnarok Festival V. The performance was eagerly supported by more than 5000 pagan metal fans from every part of the world.
When they got home, there was a nice surprise waiting for them: a proposition to sign a contract with one of the biggest European labels Napalm Records, concerning the release of the album 'Ot Serdca K Nebu' and future works of the band.
After Napalm Records released it, the band went on a 30-day tour in Europe, which ended with the performance at the great festival called BRUTAL ASSAULT.
Back at home the band decided not to go on a long hiatus and in October 2008 started working on their 5th album 'Goi, Rode, Goi.'
The level maintained on the album 'Ot Serdca K Nebu' was very high, but the band aimed to make a very unique album, something that had never been done before by them.
In the breaks during recording the band managed to release and present the second DVD "Noch Velesova" in May 2009 at Napalm Records, and also Arkona performed at the German festival 'Winternoise.'
The work on the album was finished only in June 2009, and we can say now that it was the most laborious and time-taking recording, where more than 40 musicians participated.
For the first time the band used a full-fledged chorus and a string quintet, and the special pearl of this album is the 15-minute saga 'Na Moey Zemle' which is about the adventures of a Slav in European countries, with the participation of the musicians from such bands as Manegarm, Obtest, Skyforger, Menhir and Heidevolk.
The parts of ethnical instruments on this album are performed partly by Vladimir Cherepovsky and partly by Vladimir 'Volk', who has become a full-blown member of Arkona recently.
The album cover design was done by Kris Verwimp, known to many. He carried out enormous work drawing a series of conceptual illustrations for each song of this album.

    BREZNO:
Njuni mesti sta prevzela Mitja in Max, ki sta prinesla nov val sveze energije in v trenutku postala nepogresljivi del Brezna.
